Car insurance fraud spiked in Florida as drivers wrecked their cars deliberately to file medical claims, according to an announcement from an industry group today.

Staged car accidents skyrocketed 58 percent in 2009 to 1,999, according to the National Insurance Crime Bureau’s statement today. Tampa had the worst problem, with intentional collisions quadrupling to 487, the organization said.

As of July 1, Dakota County will have a new commercial automobile insurance company: Travelers Insurance.

As of July 1, Dakota County will have a new commercial automobile insurance company: Travelers Insurance.

The current insurance carrier, One Beacon Insurance, already had already notice of non-renewal prior to expiration of the current policy. The nonrenewal was based on an unfavorable loss history and a lack of supporting lines of insurance (crime or property).

Travel insurance can be very important for many travelers.  There are a wide variety of reasons why you should take this precaution, including the following.

Even if you have great insurance when you are at home, this insurance might not travel with you.  You might suddenly go from having fantastic insurance to having absolutely no coverage at all in some cases and with some insurance companies.  For instance, they may not cover you if you are not in the country.  Sometimes the insurance might not cover certain services you could potentially need on vacation such as being taken from a cruise ship.  Even if you do have coverage, it might be different from your normal coverage.

A recent case demonstrates the importance of carefully reading an insurance policy to ensure that it remains in force. Failure to do so cost Paul and Wendy Wu dearly.

The Wus purchased a house in Windsor, Ontario to serve as an investment for their future and to produce rental income. In 2002 they rented the house to a tenant. The tenancy was uneventful until the tenant began to date a certain man. At this point, rubbish, including junk cars and tyres, began to accumulate in the yard and neighbours complained of blight and rats. The Wus were given repeated notices by the City of Windsor to clean up their property. Eventually, the Wus gave their tenant notice to vacate the property. The tenant agreed to move out on August 1 2006; however, she and her boyfriend failed to leave that day. The Wus permitted them to stay until August 5, with the tenant agreeing to clean up the property before leaving. On August 4 the tenant and her boyfriend moved out of the house and gave Mrs Wu keys to the property. As it turned out, these keys were for the front door only.

When U.S. Representative Richard Neal (D-MA) introduced, or more properly reintroduced, HR 3424, a bill aimed at closing what its proponents describe as a “loophole” in the U.S. tax code, he ignited, or more properly reignited, a longstanding controversy.

Essentially: Should foreign reinsurance companies, principally those based in Bermuda with U.S. affiliates, who write business in the U.S., continue to deduct the payments these affiliates make for reinsurance premiums to their offshore counterparts?
