Gary Puffpaff was irritated when he got a letter from Allstate Insurance informing him his homeowners’ policy wouldn’t be renewed because he had his auto insurance with another company.

Not only did Puffpaff question whether the insurer’s action was legal - which, it turns out, it is - but he also was upset because Allstate canceled his auto policies a half-dozen years ago after he filed three large claims.

FRANKFURT -(MarketWatch)- Allianz SE will restructure its German property insurance operations, involving job cuts and the launch of new products, to meet its long-term growth targets, the chief executive of Allianz Germany, Markus Riess, tells Handelsblatt in an interview published Wednesday.

“We are losing market share and profitability is neither where it used to be, nor where we want it to be,” Riess is reported as saying, adding that the division must finally swing to profitable growth.

A Citizens Property Insurance panel approved 30 recommendations Wednesday to help the state-backed insurer downsize and lower its financial risk to Floridians.

The changes will be discussed at a Cabinet meeting on Tuesday. Many would reduce Citizens’ financial risk to Floridians by millions of dollars without changing any laws. Some would effectively allow Citizens to shed policies and raise premiums.

Preview of Property Insurance Issues for the January Legislative Session

Given the comprehensive nature of residential property insurance reform in SB 408, which passed during the 2011 legislative session, expect Florida’s 2012 session to be a much quieter year in terms of property insurance. Both the House and Senate seem inclined to give the reforms passed in 2011 a chance to work. The exceptions to this approach could be legislation relating to Citizens Property Insurance Corp. and possible changes to the Florida Hurricane Catastrophe Fund (Cat Fund). Further, legislation allowing surplus lines insurers to take out Citizens’ policies has been filed.

At this time of year Lemke said the sporting goods store is also tied to what’s happening up at Mt. Baker Ski Area, and the early dumping of snow is probably a factor in the cheerfulness of some customers.

Other retailers also are noticing some early gift-shopping taking place. Both Village Books and Paper Dreams in Fairhaven have had a strong November, while business at the new Village Books store in Bellis Fair started picking up in the days leading to Black Friday, said co-owner Chuck Robinson.
