The mailboxes of consumers who are 65 and older - or who are about to turn 65 - have been filling up with correspondence from the Social Security Administration, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, and the dozens of health plans that offer prescription drug coverage. The reason? The official Medicare Annual Enrollment Period gets under way Oct. 15, an earlier start date with an earlier deadline, Dec. 7. If you are a Medicare beneficiary, you have the option to change your Medicare Advantage plan or prescription drug plan during this time.

Nov. 24–Erie International Airport is providing a major lift for the local economy.

A new study commissioned by the Pennsylvania Bureau of Aviation finds that the airport pumped almost $165 million into the region — in jobs, spending and tourism — in 2010.

That’s big business for the Erie region, said John Oliver, president of VisitErie, Erie County’s tourism promotion agency.

The man at the center of the investigation into the disappearance of a Frederick woman is set to go free.A judge has ruled that Gary Giordano, who has been jailed for four months in connection with the disappearance of Robyn Gardner, should be released. Gardner’s body has yet to be found. Throughout the investigation, Giordano has said he was innocent.The two were in Aruba for three days when Gardner suddenly vanished. Two days after her disappearance, Giordano tried to cash in a travel insurance policy he took out on her. A tourist snapped pictures of the two together shortly before Gardner disappeared.Giordano told investigators that Gardner was swept under by the current during a snorkeling trip. Surveillance video showed Giordano looking for help minutes after Gardner vanished.Chris Lejuez, Giordano’s attorney said, “All the proof that I have seen, everything up to now that I have seen clears Gary Giordano and confirms his version of the facts.” But investigators said there were inconsistencies with Giordano’s story.If the prosecution’s request for an appeal is denied, Giordano may be able to leave the island by Tuesday. Giordano’s detention had been extended in 30 day increments several times since he was taken into custody.”Once I asked him what he really feel about his release.. Giordano started to cry and asked me to excuse him for a few minutes,” said Lejuez.Gardner and Giordano met on a dating site and had known each other for a substantial amount of time, friends in Maryland said.Gardner’s boy friend said the two had a falling out before she went to Aruba.A Facebook page started by Gardner’s Maryland friends includes angry reactions to Giordano’s release.

British travel insurance customers are becoming increasingly angered by the continued high rate of aviation tax, as the government gets ready to increase them by twice the rate of inflation.

A survey from the Association of British Travel Agents has found that British holidaymakers are already displeased with the amount of tax they are charged, with 69 per cent saying they feel it is too high.
