The importance of travel insurance and researching adventures has been highlighted after a gap year student was rescued from the Atlantic Ocean.

Sarah Calascione, 19, from Kingston-upon-Thames, survived on a lifeboat in the open sea for nearly two days after the ship she was on sank off the coast of Brazil, reported the London Evening Standard.

Ms Calascione was among 41 other gap year students who endured torrential rain and waves on rubber dinghies for 40 hours before they were spotted by military planes.

She was on a voyage aboard the Canadian sailing ship Concordia when a storm struck, with students having paid £25,000 each for the voyage.

Ms Calascione’s mother Caroline, 48, told the source that it was a very harrowing and emotional experience.

“It wasn’t until we received a phone call from Sarah on Saturday that we knew she was safe,” she added.

Richard Oliver, chief executive of Year Out Group, added that it is imperative that people take out the necessary travel insurance before going on their gap year, which could cover costs for medical treatment, cancelled flights and repatriation.
