My Small Biz: Independent agent provides options

We’re an insurance agency that offers personal and commercial insurance.
We have a bilingual staff, speaking English and Spanish. We also offer a notary public service.
We do homeowners insurance, renters insurance, policies for mobile homes, auto insurance, and coverage for boats and motorcycles.
In commercial insurance, we cover trucks, restaurants, professional offices, and contractors.
I’m an independent agent. We write policies with Progressive, Mercury Insurance, Palisades, Zurich, Foremost, and Farmer’s of Flemington.
With an independent agent, you can get the best coverage and the best price, because you can shop around for the policy.
There haven’t been big increases in the costs of personal insurance lately. There’s a lot of competition right now with direct riders for auto insurance, and real estate insurance isn’t doing well because of the depressed real estate market.
In auto insurance, a lot of people now are buying from the Internet, which sometimes is a little less expensive but they don’t get the personal service. Sometimes they don’t know exactly what they’re buying and might not realize why it was cheaper until they have a claim, that sort of thing.
For instance, let’s say a client has a half-a-million-dollar home, and he buys a $15,000/$30,000 coverage level, the state minimum for liability, on his auto insurance. That’s not going to protect him from getting a lien against his house if there’s a claim against him.
This business allows me to be independent and also to help people. We can protect their assets and keep them financially safe.
The business is always changing. In this business you have to satisfy your clients and also the insurance companies. You’re the one in-between, and you have to keep them both happy.
We have been in business more than 40 years. When you call our office, you talk to a person, not a machine. We represent more than 10 companies to give clients the best coverage and price.
By continuing to give customers good service, that allows us to stay in business.
