Is there a Dead Peasant Life Insurance Policy Out on You?

by admin on Nov.24, 2011, under Life and Health insurance

Have you heard the term dead peasant life insurance? It refers to a life insurance policy an employer holds on an employee. The employer is listed as the beneficiary and collects a death benefit if the employee dies.

The practice began with companies insuring key employees, those whose loss would severely impact company operation. The insurance was to help compensate the companies for the loss of the employees’ highly valued services. Later, some companies decided that employee life insurance was a sound investment in general, and they began to take out policies on low- and middle-level employees. At times, the employees would not be informed. Interest would accrue on the policies, and the proceeds were non-taxable. Also, the cash value of the policies could serve as loan collateral.

Carry on Clement legacy

by admin on Nov.21, 2011, under Life and Health insurance

I remember the first time I met him. It was at his office in the basement of North Carolina Mutual Life Insurance. He called the meeting to discuss my role as a community leader. I was new to the city, and the meeting served as his way of orientating me to the unique ways in the community he loves so much.”Reverend Kenney,” he said, his baritone voice preceding a firm handshake that left me awestruck by his blend of charisma and passion. “I’m Howard Clement.”I fought back a few tears as he told the story of how he came to Durham, why, at that time, he was a member of the Republican Party and his early years as an advocate for those who needed a spokesperson. The tears were because he reminds me so much of my father. His ability to maneuver in between varied ideologies drew me to wanting to know more. His insight was fresh breath as I pondered my grapple in finding a kin spirit in the city I was learning to love. We talked about his efforts in establishing Malcolm X Liberation University in 1969. It was the vision of Howard Fuller, who came to Durham from Milwaukee in 1965 to coordinate community organization efforts for Operation Breakthrough. The university was housed in an abandoned warehouse on Pettigrew Street to train African Americans to run their own business and to teach cultural traditions. Fuller pressed the adoption of the black manifesto which demanded $500 in reparations from every white Christian church and synagogue in the nation to finance the enterprise. The North Carolina Diocese of the Episcopal Church made a large donation to the university. Clement, a member of the Episcopal Church, talked about the struggles that faced the effort. Fuller suspended operation of the university in 1970 and moved it to Greensboro. It didn’t last long there. In the summer of 1968, Clement led the protest of the Black Solidarity Committee for Community Improvement (BCSCCI). The group drafted a 15-page memorandum of demands that was presented to the Chamber of Commerce and the Merchants Association. The group threatened an economic boycott, public demonstrations and civil disobedience if demands weren’t satisfied. On July 28, 1968, the group boycotted the Northgate Shopping Center, Model Cleaners and the Coca-Cola Bottling Co. and more over time. In response to the protest the city formed the Human Relations Commission which comprised eight African Americans and seven whites. The BCSCCI submitted 19 conditions to end the boycott. Hayti received better fire protection, the Recreation Department hired African Americans in upper-level jobs, the facilities at W.D. Hill Center were improved and United Durham Incorporated (UDI) received substantial funding. It was reported that merchants lost $900,000 before the boycott ended on Feb. 16, 1969.Clement was elected to serve on the City Council in 1983. That’s 28 years. His run is coming to an end. Many speculate that he will step down before the end of this year. Failing health is the only challenger capable of removing Clement from office. The chase to replace Clement comes amid a possible change in council ward boundaries. Bill Kalkhof, president of Durham Downtown Inc., is licking his lips over the possibility of a run for the seat covering Ward 2, Clement’s territory. City staff has recommended changes that would place Kalkhof in Ward 3, the area represented by Councilman Mike Woodard. If placed in Ward 3, it is doubtful that Kalkhof has the political clout to defeat the popular councilman. There is an issue that resonates even more than the council battles involving ward boundaries. Given the life and legacy of Clement, it’s important to consider what message we send in replacing him.Clement has worked hard, and we owe it to him to pass the baton to a person sensitive to the lessons learned from holding that office, as an African American, for close to 30 years. The person who sits in that chair should be aware of the labor taken to represent all of the residents of Durham. From fighting to sit at the counter at the Royal Ice Cream Parlor to moving from the balcony at the Carolina Theatre, Clement has been there and done that.On last thing. There’s a third floor ballroom just remodeled at the Carolina Theatre. Message to the president of the theater and all board members: Name it the Arthur John Howard Clement, III Ballroom. It’s the least we can do to say thank you.
