The launch of Zurich’s motor insurance proposition marks the company’s entry into the retail insurance market and is the first of many product launches scheduled for this year and 2012, said a senior official.

The average cost of car insurance has soared to £843 year causing further financial stress on families struggling with rising living costs.

Worst hit are drivers in the North of England, who now face annual premiums of nearly £1,400.

These increases are more than six times the current rate of inflation. The Consumer Price Index - the Government’s preferred measure of inflation is now running at 4.5 per cent.

Ministers are claimed to have said that this is due to the fact that people are already driving at that speed and that implementing the change could cut journey times significantly. Insurance price comparison site Confused.com commissioned a survey of 2,000 drivers on tire-related matters to coincide with the U.K.’s tire safety month.

The site points out that drivers could see their motor insurance claims denied, get 12 penalty points on their license and face fines of up to £10,000, simply by failing to take proper care of their tires.
