When should my parents add me to their car insurance policy? | Auto Insurance Quotes Portsmouth
by admin on Apr.30, 2010, under Car insurance
I live in Virginia, I am 17 years old. I have held my license for a year and four months. My parents have Allstate. During that time, my parents did not add me to their policy. Now they have decided to add me to the policy, but I heard that insurance companies will charge you from the date that you receive your license (meaning they will charge me for the year and four months that I did not have any insurance even though that I did not drive during that time). Is this true?

Normally, insurance companies CAN charge you from the date first licensed, as you SHOULD have been insured.
Some don’t. Some do. You could ask your agent, but that would tip them off that your parents were committing insurance fraud, so that’s probably a bad idea.
I guess you have to wait and see.
The companies that I dealt with required you to be added once you had a drivers license that gave you full privileges to drive which became available after completing the first 2 stages of a graduated license program.
They did not require you to be added while you were on a learners permit. Each company sets their own procedure, I don’t know what Allstate’s stand is on this issue.
based upon your situation,I think you should find something useful here http://www.AutoInsuranceIdeas.info/auto-insurance-free.htm
Your parent should NEVER add you to there insurance.
Start building a relationship with an insurance company earl in life.
