Winter sports insurance: are you sure you’re covered?

For some of us, the idea of a holiday couldn’t be further away - most of us are planning on wrapping up warm, turning on the heating and getting ready for the festive season.
But for the more adventurous types amongst us, the fun is just about to start. This winter, many of us will be heading for snowier climes on skiing and snowboarding trips.
Travel insurance will be considered a necessity by many of those people. But research from Defaqto has found that more than one in ten single-trip travel insurance policies don’t cover winter sports at all - potentially leaving thousands of holidaymakers unknowingly without protection.
Furthermore, Defaqto found “significant variation” in the cover provided by the 342 single-trip travel insurance policies available at the time of the research. For example, 80% provide cover of less than £1,000 for loss or theft of winter sports gear, while 6% offer no cover at all for hired equipment. Only 8% provide cover for ‘piste closure’, and only 16% offer cover for ‘avalanche delay’.
An insurance expert at Think Money said: “Travel insurance is important for any foreign trip, but winter sports pose their own risks that people should make sure they are protected against. As ever, it’s up to them to make sure their insurance gives them adequate cover.
“It’s also important that people don’t forget the basics - things like health treatment and cancelled flights - which could have a serious financial impact without the right cover.”
